Things I Use & Recommend

Here are a few things that I enjoy using, usually help me be more effective, and make life a little more easy for what I do.

Looking for a great USB microphone that lives on your desk and is great for audio applications and podcasting? For electric guitar effects pedals, the Line 6 POD HD 500 has been great for me and the rest of the team. In fact, we all plug direct in now. The HD 500 comes with looping, which is a great practice and jam feature.

I broke down and traded my computer speakers in for a set of powered studio monitors. And I can tell you, it's opened a whole new world for me. My mixes immediately improved, simply because I could hear. I got the Yamaha HS80M Studio Reference Monitors and they are great. There are also smaller ones of the same make called Yamaha HS50M 5" Monitors , which are nice for smaller setups. They give a nice flat response and are great for hearing the full spectrum. I recommend using some IsoAcoustics ISO-L8R155 - Medium to set the monitors on. They will "float" the monitors where you need them and minimize desk contact.

If you play guitar, there's no excuse to use one of these tuners. Professional musicians don't trust their ears, they trust a tuner. This one is not expensive and it has a low profile. Give the Snark SN-1 Tuner a try.

If you are running loops/tracks in your worship environment and you'd like to graduate from split MP3 tracks (what I recommend for simplicity), then you'll want to get Ableton Live 8 Full Version Audio Software and head over to multitracks.com to get rolling.

Since I travel with my laptop and use Main Stage as my MIDI sound source, I really care about portable and desktop MIDI keyboards/controllers. I've found AKAI to be some of the best out there for this. I highly recommend either Akai Pro MPK Mini 25-Key Ultra-Portable USB MIDI Keyboard Controller or the Akai Pro LPK25 25-Key Ultra-Portable USB MIDI Keyboard Controller for Laptops which fits in your mobile bag and is super light. I've laid down a few tracks at McD's with this USB powered keyboard and it works great for this kind of work. And if portability isn't what you are looking for and you'd like a nice home/office studio MIDI controller and want some hammer action feel, then go with the Akai Pro MPK88 Hammer Action USB Midi Controller
